Room to Receive
The neurobiology of belief and the physics of possibility:
why most affirmations backfire, and the method that works
Most of us don't lack
wanting. We lack room.
Affirmations and manifestation can work, but most people are taught to do them in a way that quietly works against the brain. Research shows that repeating affirmations you don't believe can leave you feeling worse, and that picturing only the dream can drain the energy you need to reach it.
In this book, Maia Ferra shows you the right way, grounded in neurobiology and psychological research. You'll learn how your brain predicts your future and how to change that prediction, how to write affirmations your mind won't argue with, and how to visualise in a way that moves you to act.
You'll also learn to hold on to the good things that arrive instead of letting them slip away. Five simple steps. A 28-day practice. Thirty ready-to-use affirmations. Manifestation that works with your brain, not against it.
A gentle, practical guide to noticing old expectations, finding words you can believe, and taking small steps towards change.
- Recognise the patterns that shape what you expect.
- Build affirmations that feel believable.
- Bring the five-step method into daily life with a 28-day plan.
You love affirmations, but some part of you doesn't quite believe them.
When wanting more feels complicated
- You've tried manifestation and felt hopeful, then quietly ashamed when it “didn't work”.
- Good news makes you nervous, as if you're waiting for the other shoe to drop.
- You can give love, time and money easily, but receiving feels uncomfortable.
- You understand your patterns perfectly, and still repeat them.
- You want the spiritual and the scientific, without having to pick a side.
- Affirmations feel hopeful, but hard to believe.
- Receiving care, praise or good news feels uncomfortable.
- You understand your patterns and want a way to practise change.
The Widening
Five movements for gently raising what I call your Familiar Ceiling: the amount of good that feels safe to have. You move through them like a breath, again and again, from a wider place each time.
Five movements to return to, at your own pace.
See
Catch the Inner Forecast, your mind's automatic prediction about what life will give you, as it happens.
Soothe
Settle the body enough that new possibilities feel safe to consider. The body says yes first.
Speak
Replace affirmations that start an argument with Bridge Sentences your heart can accept.
Stretch
Picture and feel the future as already real, then take one-degree steps above your ceiling.
Stay
Practise the rarest skill of all: letting good things land, and letting yourself keep them.
- 01
See
Notice the expectation behind your reaction.
- 02
Soothe
Pause and make space before responding.
- 03
Speak
Choose a sentence that feels believable.
- 04
Stretch
Take one small step towards what matters.
- 05
Stay
Practise letting a good moment land.
Why “I am abundant” can make you feel worse
Words you can believe
In a well-known 2009 study, people with low self-esteem who repeated a glowing affirmation felt worse afterwards. When a sentence is too far from what we believe, something inside argues back, and the argument wins.
The book teaches you to build a ladder instead. Pick a wish to see one. The bar shows how loudly an inner voice tends to rebut each rung.
Choose love or rest, and find a sentence you can begin with.
Start on the lowest rung that feels true and still a little alive. Climb when the rebuttal goes quiet.
The scores illustrate the idea; they are not a measurement or assessment.

The spirit and the evidence
Room to Receive honours both worlds: the laboratory and the meditation cushion. Every chapter ends with The Honest Science, a short panel that places each idea in one of three ways of knowing.
No blame and no empty promises. Just a clear, kind account of what helps, and why.
Each chapter closes with The Honest Science, distinguishing established research, emerging ideas and spiritual traditions.
WISDOMContemplative and spiritual teachings, offered as traditions rather than established scientific findings.
The ceiling is not a verdict on your worth. It is a record of what once kept you safe.
